CLASSIFICATION SOCIETY

Surveyors, either exclusive or non-exclusive, are appointed by classification societies providing services ranging from plan approval to condition monitoring by continuous survey of hull and machinery throughout the life of the vessel.

Other annual and bi-annual surveys are carried out for classification purposes on behalf of statutory authorities for the issuing of safety certificates. These certificates cover the construction of the vessel and include radio and safety equipment and cargo gear.

When the government concerned authorise it, the class society will survey the vessel in regard to provisions of the national or international regulations applicable and report and issue the corresponding certificates on their behalf

Classification societies provide technical services, including container and tank container surveys, risk analysis and safety audit for marine and non-marine operations and quantitative inspections for export and import cargoes.

Classification societies can also act on behalf of insurers in relation to damage surveys and repair.
