An applicant for full or associate membership must be a practicing marine surveyor and be engaged in work in any of the following categories:

  • Cargo/Hull/Machinery Surveys, usually on behalf of Ship owners, or Operators,
  • P & I Clubs, Classification Societies and Hull and Machinery Underwriters carried out on a continuing basis, including general average, on/off hire surveys and condition surveys of ocean going vessels
  • Surveys for the Marine Sections of Insurance Companies covering cargo (whether by sea, land, or air provided that it is covered under a marine Policy), Hull and Marine Machinery, and

  • Surveys of Small Craft, whether government, commercial or privately owned, for condition, valuation, damage or as required by interested parties
  • AIMS also considers student membership applications from persons who are;

    • Undertaking an apprenticeship with a marine survey organisation or maritime authority
    • Undertaking formal study as a Marine Surveyor with the AIMS Registered Training Organisation
    • Undertaking a graduate or post graduate maritime degree at an Australian higher education institution

AIMS membership is at the discretion of the Executive and is available to a wide range of surveyors as well as classification societies, affiliated trades and specialist fields. 

All members are required to acknowledge and adhere to the Institute's Code of Conduct and Ethics.
