Nearly every industry today uses professional development programs to keep their professional workforce up to speed on the latest changes in the industry.

Throughout each year AIMS conducts a range of professional development programs and information sessions that deal specifically with marine surveying practices, legislation and new reforms that will impact on marine surveyors. Keep an eye out on our event calendar on the home page. 

Professional development programs, whether via distance learning, in a classroom situation or at conferences with expert speakers, is a great way to stay competitive in an ever-changing professional landscape.

AIMS also offers professional development courses throughout the year via distance learning however half day workshops can be scheduled throughout 2019.  


IDS01 - Prepare and Present Professional Marine Survey Reports

$220 members (until Sept 1st 2020 )  - $550 non-members

This short course is a core unit in both the Adv Diploma and International Diploma qualifications.

Being able to prepare a professional report forms the corner stone of a successful marine survey career no matter what sector of the industry you work in. Understanding the basic templates for reports and how to structure and present your report can make a difference to your standing as a professional.

The course focuses on

The purpose and legality of the marine survey report

Structure and formatting of different types of reports

Writing the report and using diagrams and photographs

Blue Water Bridging Course

$900 members $1200 non-members

This short course has three units/modules and is aimed at providing existing surveyors with the foundation knowledge of the National Law and the requirements for statutory surveys of vessels under 60 metres.

The course focuses on

Conducting a statutory survey for Domestic Commercial Vessel

Assessing a vessels compliance to Marine Environment Protection and

Identifying factors  that affect a commercial vessel’s fitness for purpose.

Investigate Marine Incidents

$450 Members - $650 non members

This short course has two units / modules and is designed to give students the underpinning knowledge in how to carry out investigations of both Domestic and Blue Water vessel incidents as well as providing expert witness statements in judicial or quasi-judicial setting.

Marine Warranty Surveys

$550 members $790 non-members

This course (one unit) provides the learner with information on warranty clauses, identifying and mitigating risks, developing and implementing appropriate survey procedures. It includes foundation knowledge of the marine warranty insurance industry, the role of the marine surveyor in warranty surveys, confirming the scope of services and ensuring that survey tasks are carried out in accordance with the warranty.

On / Off Hire Surveys

$550 members $790 non-members

This course (one unit) covers the survey procedures required to carry out and on/off hire survey and inspect cargo holds, weather decks, cargo handling areas, and cargo cranes/gear. It also provides the knowledge required to undertake the sounding of bunker fuel tanks and calculate the amount fuel on board at the commencement or conclusion of a charter.

Implement WHS Requirements for Marine Survey Tasks

This course (one unit) covers the skills and knowledge required to conduct work health and safety (WHS) risk management processes for marine survey tasks. It applies to all sectors of the industry

Conduct a Draft Survey

$550 members $790 non-members

The main purpose of a Draft survey is to measure the weight of cargo loaded into a ship. In simple terms, the increase/decrease in displacement after loading/discharging a cargo, adjusted for any changes in on board, non-cargo weights, represents the weight of cargo loaded / discharged.

This course provides in depth instruction on how to conduct a draft survey, how to calculate the weight of cargo and use the stability basics to perform a good draft survey.
